Breast Cancer Q & A

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the breast. It occurs when there’s a rapid growth of cells in the breast tissue, creating a tumor. Cancer can affect one or both breasts.

Arizona Center for Cancer Care is a leader in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. The practice even has a newly diagnosed breast cancer clinic to help you understand the disease and your treatment options.

What are the types of breast cancer?

Doctors classify breast cancer into a type based on the specific cell that’s growing out of control. There are many types of breast cancer, including:

Invasive ductal carcinoma

Invasive ductal carcinoma is a type of cancer that starts in the ducts of the breast, which are the tubes that carry breast milk to the nipple.

Invasive lobular carcinoma

Invasive lobular carcinoma starts in the breast lobules, which are the glands that produce breast milk.

Inflammatory breast cancer

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare, aggressive type of breast cancer that affects the movement of fluid through the lymph vessels, causing the breast to look inflamed.

Triple-negative breast cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer is an aggressive cancer that doesn’t have the diagnostic markers (estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, or HER2 protein) commonly found in other types of breast cancer. When testing a sample of the tumor, all three tests come back negative.

What are some of the breast cancer treatment options?

Arizona Center for Cancer Care talks to you about your treatment options for breast cancer during your initial consultation. Treatment depends on breast cancer type, stage, medical history, and family history.

Breast cancer treatment might include:

Surgery

Surgery to remove the tumor is one of the primary treatments for breast cancer. Surgery may include partial mastectomy (removal of only the cancerous tissue) or total mastectomy (removal of the entire breast).

Arizona Center for Cancer Care uses advanced tissue-sparing surgical techniques that treat the cancer while maximizing aesthetic appearance.

Arizona Center for Cancer Care works in partnership with the Comprehensive Breast Center of Arizona for surgery to get you the best care possible.

Medical oncology

Medical oncology includes treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, or immunotherapy. Arizona Center for Cancer Care may recommend medical oncology following surgery to prevent a recurrence of your cancer.

Radiation oncology

Radiation oncology uses high-energy beams to target and kill cancer cells in a specific location. They use this type of radiation following limited breast surgery to prevent local relapse.

Arizona Center for Cancer Care also offers brachytherapy, a type of localized radiation therapy that uses radioactive seeds or beads as well as temporary catheters that emit a dose of radiation to localized breast cancer.

Arizona Center for Cancer Care may recommend combining chemotherapy with radiation therapy to improve the effectiveness of your treatments.

Arizona Center for Cancer Care also participates in clinical trials so that you may have access to the newest breast cancer treatment options.
