Arizona Center for Cancer Care Recognizes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Every September National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is observed. Designating a specific month for prostate cancer serves the purpose of increasing public awareness for prostate health and screenings, educating about risk factors and symptoms, and advocating for further research on prostate health issues.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men. About one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be about 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed this year (roughly 5,000 in Arizona) and about 31,620 deaths from prostate cancer in the United States.

Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer

There are several risk factors associated with prostate cancer, including Testosterone replacement therapy, family history, race, and diet, but the most common factor is age. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men with roughly six in ten cases diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

While there are a lot of risk factors for prostate cancer, survival rates are usually very high. More than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today. As with all cancers, early detection is very important to ensure a high cure rate. It is important to talk with your primary care doctor about prostate cancer screening to improve the chances of early detection.

At Arizona Center for Cancer Care, radiation therapy is used as a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer. Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for prostate cancer because it works within cancer cells to limit their ability to multiply and spread. During treatment, focused X-rays are delivered to the prostate safely and effectively eliminate cancer cells. Side effects are usually very tolerable, and most patients are able to continue their normal daily activities during the treatment course.
