Did you know lung cancer kills 2 times as many women as breast cancer? Even more, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United States and worldwide. In fact, lung cancer is responsible for more deaths in this country than the next three most common causes of cancer combined – colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

According to estimates by the National Cancer Institute, nearly a quarter of a million patients will be diagnosed with lung and bronchus cancer this year, and roughly 135,000 patients will die of the lung cancer in the United States in 2021.

Most Common Cause

Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer. Other risk factors for lung cancer include being exposed to secondhand smoke, having a family history of lung cancer, and exposure to Radon gas, asbestos, chromium, nickel, arsenic, soot, or tar in the workplace. When smoking is combined with other risk factors, the risk of lung cancer is increased.

There are two main forms of lung cancer– small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is the more common form. As with most cancers, and early diagnosis is advantageous in fighting Lung Cancer, in an effort to prevent further growth or the cancer spreading.

Treatments for Lung Cancer

  • Surgery. An operation where doctors cut out cancer tissue.
  • Chemotherapy. Using special medicines to shrink or kill the cancer.
  • Radiation therapy. Using high-energy X-rays to kill the cancer.
  • Targeted therapy. Using drugs to block the growth and spread of cancer cells.
